Mark: We never intended the editorial to be about Wade Franck’s death in any way. I don’t see a connection at all, and I’m sorry if you and others read it that way. Actually, this was written in response to an accident that a Register writer’s son had on a trail. If he hadn’t been wearing a helmet, he would be in very bad shape right now, if he would have lived. And we were responding to the fact that many of us see way too many people riding without helmets. It’s as simple as that. Of course helmets don’t prevent crashes. I agree completely that we need to look at other solutions. The Register will be looking at the topic of bike safety and traffic laws in a series of stories. That was not the purpose of this editorial. I do hope you read our editorial that was about Wade’s death and unsafe driving.
