Project: Branded Motion Graphics Ad Campaign for Nintendo Switch
I decided to create a series of three 15–30 second animations for this Emerging Multi-media Practice course based on the “Nintendo Switch product Motion Graphics Ad Campaign” that will be produced throughout the semester. It was difficult for me to find suitable brand products to use when creating motion design video packages. I had to brainstorm different brands that would fit well together to produce a series of three 15-second animations. In an online meeting with my professor, Kristopher Ohlendorf, I chose the “Nintendo Switch” brand product for my Branded Motion Graphics AD. Thanks to my professor, I was able to expand this brand idea.
My motivation for choosing this challenging project is my love of gaming, video/motion editing, digital design and creating illustrations through Illustrator or Photoshop. I am passionate about being creative, which is what drives me to become a multimedia/motion designer.
Project Overview
The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console created by the Nintendo company. Basically, it is a tablet that can be used as a gaming console or as a tablet that can be used as a handheld gamepad. It was released worldwide on March 3, 2017. This project was inspired by this opportunity. Back in my previous semester, I learned more about designing logo brands in After Effects, and I want these skills to help me become a better motion designer.
Project Goal
The main objective of this project is to create three 15-second animations using Adobe After Effects promoting the Nintendo Switch brand, export MP4 renders for each animation, and link them to YouTube.
I planned to promote the Nintendo Switch features including a Switch console, promote games, and customization of Joy-Con colours.
It will improve my motion design editing skills and prepare me for a variety of motion graphic design jobs in the future.
Tasks & plan:
- Research for more Nintendo switch product motion graphic inspiration videos.
- Create a mood board design, brand aesthetics, and style.
- Create a storyboard using rough draft paper.
- Create Nintendo switch designs using Illustrator for three videos.
- Create 3 style frames for each three Switch products.
Technology Used
- Software: Adobe Illustrator, After Effect, Miro
- Resources/online tools: YouTube, Motion Array, Behance
Creative Process
I started researching aesthetic brands, styles, and colours of products to know how they looked.
As I reviewed my Brand aesthetics and styles, I had to draw storyboards using pen and paper for every three videos to serve as visual guides through the production process before moving on to After Effects. I sketched three storyboards for Nintendo Switch: Feature System, Color customization, and Game promotion.
Sketching this first storyboard wasn’t easy, I had to look to Nintendo switch commercials for inspiration to jot down sketch ideas to make it my own. I still need to make this first storyboard have the same style but different animation as the other two.
After successfully sketching and reviewing my 3 storyboards, it is time for me to design style frames from our storyboards in adobe illustrator. Additionally, I created a style tile to get a better idea of how the style frames should look. Using this idea from the Multimedia Design 2 course gave me a better understanding of how colors, textures, and fonts work together before heading to the final design.
While continuing all three style frames using Style tile that really helps me boost up my work before heading to Affter Effects. In Illustrator, each frame has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, so it can be exported to Adobe After Effects.
Furthermore, I developed images of the Nintendo switch and more that would blend well with motion animation.
Final Deliverables
Here are my 3 final Nintendo Switch ADs:
- Nintendo Switch AD- Feature System
2. Nintendo Switch AD- Joycon Colors
3. Nintendo Switch AD- Game Promotion
Reflection
- My project goal is to create three 15–30 second animations based on the “Nintendo Switch product Motion Graphics Ad Campaign”, rendering each of them in MP4 and posting them on YouTube like a Nintendo Switch commercials. Due to my intense determination to gain more knowledge of motion design, I was able to complete all of my tasks on time. I prioritized my study schedule and free time to achieve my goals.
- The challenge for me in working on my project is maintaining my time schedule and workload between my various classes, so that I can keep up to date with my work schedule and prepare myself for the workplace in the future.
- I chose this project because motion design is not just about animating your design, it’s also about creating in your own imagination like you can CREATE with your hand.
- The most significant thing I learned in college was to be very responsible for my life, career, and future. As a student and a designer, college and this course program have made me a better person.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my experience with you. Feel free to add any feedback to my project.
