I think you’re absolutely right that a vote could convey protest, but I doubt significant numbers of white evangelicals will defect from the GOP this year. That would really be something, though.

I also think the Democrats have started reaching out to discontented evangelicals. The DNC seemed to feature more God-talk and preaching than the RNC this year.
