Jonathan: I think you’re absolutely right that a vote could convey protest, but I doubt significant numbers of white evangelicals will defect from the GOP this year. That would really be something, though.

I also think the Democrats have started reaching out to discontented evangelicals. The DNC seemed to feature more God-talk and preaching than the RNC this year (just look at what Sen. Cory Booker and Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II had to say).

David: You’re right about the distinction between identity and ideas. It’s incredibly hard and uncomfortable to buck your tribe, even when there are very compelling reasons to do so — like this year!
