Researchers have statistical claims that you do not need 51% of the network hash rate to perform a 51% attack. There are centralized Bitcoin pools currently operating that control enough hash rate to theoretically execute such an attack. Will it happen?…doubtful.
Many problems that currently exist with Bitcoin and Ethereum are related to transaction throughput. Innovations such as state channels, Raiden, could significantly mitigate these issues. EOS will be a coin that directly addresses the short-comings of Ethereum being developed by Dan Larimer.
