Demonstrating Altruism can Save Britt McHenry’s Television Career

Whether or not we admit it, we’ve all done it in the past. We’ve all handled conflict in a less than honorable way. But, to our advantage — our past mistakes don’t usually go viral. Welcome to the age of social media. Big brother is always within earshot or a zoom of a camera lens away.

Britt McHenry’s video rant landed her on suspension for a week from ESPN. The consequences of this video can have a long time adverse impact on her personal brand. Although, she is relatively known throughout the world of sports, her short career span doesn’t warrant familiarity to the masses. Her cache isn’t at a level yet where people will be inclined to give her a “pass” or can fairly make an accurate assessment of her character. This incident will likely define her for many years to come. And, video lives on and on and on….in cyberspace.

Public figures should be relatable. In essence, her choice words comes across as elitist and this can unfavorably impact her likability with viewers.

But, to her advantage — she is an attractive woman and the world doesn’t know much about her. Although her looks are without her own merit and by circumstance, it does give her an upper hand. Most people respond well to good looking people. I’m not saying that makes it fair. Second chances should be granted to everyone, regardless of appearance. Simply stating, statistics show a direct correlation of preferential treatment in the workforce when it pertains to attractive people. Attractive beings tend to earn higher incomes in the workforce than their less attractive counterparts. So the odds of forgiveness are in her favor.

But, it will take more than inheriting the “genetic lottery” to save her career. She offered up a half baked apology on Twitter that did not resonate well with the public. She has to somehow find a way to show remorse for her behavior, without it appearing disingenuous. In time, she will be able to distance herself between this snafu — but she must align with a goodwill cause that she truly is passionate about. This will allow viewers to see her in a different light. But, it has to be sincere.

And, she can share her narrative in a meaningful way to tell the world who she really is and what she truly stands for. And, then — that one moment in her career when she made an awful misstep will be long forgotten.
