I think the reason why the deaths of Prince (and Bowie) guts us so completely is their courage in embracing and amplifying their difference. Hopefully they did have the support and encouragement of loved ones, but I think they must also have had an incredible belief in their own greatness, to be consistently and unpredictably defiant and to remain true to themselves within this notoriously toxic industry.
