8 Ways the Trump Administration Has Hurt Michigan Families

Ahead of Donald Trump’s State of the Union address tonight, the Michigan Democratic Party is highlighting 8 concrete ways that his corrupt and chaotic administration has broken promises and directly hurt Michigan families.

“Donald Trump has repeatedly broken promises, lied, and attacked our values — and Michiganders are paying the price,” stated MDP Chair Lavora Barnes. “He’s abandoned Michigan families on core issues like jobs, healthcare, and clean water — while putting the interests of billionaires and big corporations first. Republican politicians are tied directly to these failures and we’re going to continue holding them accountable.”

Trump is deeply unpopular in Michigan. A recent poll found, “Nearly 56 percent of Michigan respondents said the country is on the wrong track, as opposed to 28 percent who said it’s on the right track,” according to the Detroit News. The poll also noted Michiganders overwhelmingly blame Trump for the harmful government shutdown.

8 Ways the Trump Administration Has Broken Promises & Hurt Michigan Families:

Michigan Auto Plants Closing: Instead of following through on his campaign promise to revive American manufacturing, General Motors is closing their Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant and Warren transmission operations plant.

Attacking Healthcare for People with Pre-Existing Conditions: The Trump Administration is supporting a lawsuit to gut the Affordable Care Act, including its protections for Michiganders with pre-existing health conditions.

Expensive Tax Cuts for Millionaires & Billionaires: Instead of using GOP control of DC to fulfill campaign promises on infrastructure or lowering prescription drug costs, Trump blew up the national deficit by passing a $1.5 trillion tax giveaway that primarily benefits millionaires and billionaires.

Ignoring PFAS Crisis: The Trump administration is refusing to “set a drinking water limit for two toxic chemicals that are contaminating millions of Americans’ tap water,” including PFAS which has contaminated drinking water and water sources throughout Michigan.

Shutting Down the Government: Thousands of Michigan workers struggled through this past Winter and went without paychecks for weeks after Trump shutdown the government.

Rising Healthcare Costs: Trump has used his office to sabotage the Affordable Care Act at every turn, causing costs and premiums to rise for working families in Michigan. .

Weaker Protections for Survivors: Under Betsy DeVos, Trump’s Department of Education changed Title IX rules to weaken protections for survivors of on-campus sexual assault.

Threatening the Great Lakes: Trump has repeatedly tried to eliminate vital funding for protecting and restoring the Great Lakes, and prioritized corporate interests over keeping Michigan’s water clean. Recently, Trump picked an ex-oil lobbyist to be the Interior Secretary.
