As Lawsuit to Gut Protections for Pre-Existing Conditions Starts, MDP & Dana Nessel Slam Schuette for Refusing to Defend Healthcare for Michigan Families
Oral Arguments in Major Healthcare Legal Battle — Texas v. United States — Starting Today
As oral arguments are starting today for a lawsuit to eliminate protections for people with pre-existing conditions, the Michigan Democratic Party and Democratic Candidate for Attorney General Dana Nessel held a press call to slam Bill Schuette for refusing to defend healthcare for Michigan families.
In particular, the lawsuit at the center of today’s arguments — Texas v. United States — is designed to gut protections for people with pre-existing health conditions. Instead of fighting to protect healthcare for Michigan families, Bill Schuette is refusing to join the group of seventeen state AG’s trying to intervene and block the lawsuit.
“Bill Schuette is letting the Trump administration steamroll right over him on its way to try to take healthcare away from seniors, parents, and their children right here in Michigan,” stated Democratic Candidate for Attorney General Dana Nessel. “Fortunately and in contrast to Bill Schuette, there are seventeen state AG’s fighting to defend the Affordable Care Act in the face of this Republican assault on healthcare. And if this fight is still happening in January when I’m Attorney General, that number would increase to eighteen. Because unlike Bill Schuette, when Donald Trump and the Republicans in DC come after our healthcare, I’m going to stand up and fight as tenaciously as possible on behalf of all Michigan families.”
“No matter how he tries to spin it, Schuette’s refusal to join this lawsuit happening today shows he can’t be trusted to protect healthcare for people with pre-existing health conditions. He uses his office to put himself and special interests first — even if that means Michigan families lose healthcare,” added Michigan Democratic Party Chair Brandon Dillon.
