MDP on Defeat of Latest Republican Effort to Repeal Health Care
Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Sen. Gary Peters, Fellow Senate Dems, Joined By McCain, Collins, Murkowksi, Stop GOP Health Care Repeal
LANSING — The Michigan Democratic Party issued the following statement today, on behalf of Party Chair Brandon Dillon, regarding the 49–51 defeat of Senate Republicans’ latest health care repeal effort:
“Defeat of the GOP health care repeal is a victory for the people of Michigan, but especially our most vulnerable citizens — seniors, children, the poor, and all those with pre-existing conditions, whose lives would have been turned upside down if Republicans had gotten their way. Their bill was a complete and utter disaster, but thanks to the steadfast leadership and tireless efforts of Senator Debbie Stabenow and Senator Gary Peters, along with 49 of their colleagues in the U.S. Senate, Michigan families can breathe a sigh of relief.
“With the latest Republican health care repeal defeated, it’s time to turn the page and work together — across the aisle — to lower costs and ensure everyone has access to quality, affordable health care. However, while hope may be renewed for a bipartisan effort to improve our health care system, we will not let our guard down, and we will not forget that every single Michigan Republican openly supported taking health care away from hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens. Defeat does not give any Michigan Republican absolution or immunity, and we will not forget the names of those who supported a bill that would have destroyed the lives of millions — Fred Upton, Dave Trott, Mike Bishop, Jack Bergman, Tim Walberg, Bill Huizenga, Paul Mitchell, John Moolenaar, Justin Amash, Lena Epstein, Robert Young, John James, Patrick Colbeck, Brian Calley, and Bill Schuette — nor will the people of Michigan.”
