MDP Statement on Michigan Republicans’ Refusal to Renounce Support for Trump

LANSING — The Michigan Democratic Party released the following statement today, on behalf of Party Chair Brandon Dillon, regarding refusals by Michigan GOP Congressional and State House candidates to renounce their support for Donald Trump following the release of a 2005 recording on which Trump can be heard making disgusting, lewd sexual comments about women:

“It’s not just what Trump said about women that deserves condemnation, it’s the man himself that should be condemned and support for him unequivocally renounced,” said Brandon Dillon, Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. “Yet, even 24 hours later, the so-called leaders of the Michigan GOP, the individuals who think they deserve to represent the citizens of this state in Congress and our legislature, refuse to take a stand and renounce their support for Donald Trump and his reprehensible candidacy for president.”

“Republicans like Mike Bishop, Tim Walberg, David Trott, Jack Bergman, and every, single GOP candidate for the State House, have hidden behind empty statements or said nothing at all. But it’s what they refuse to say that reveals their true colors. By standing with Donald Trump, each of these individuals is saying that they do not stand with the women of Michigan. Which then begs the question, if they refuse to stand up for women in the face of such despicable and disgusting behavior now, how can they ever be trusted to stand up for the rights and interests of women when they represent them in Congress or the legislature? If they continue their silence and refuse to renounce their support for Donald Trump, that question will be answered loud and clear without any of them needing to utter a word.”
