Michigan Dems Hold 13th Congressional District Mobilization Summit
Local Residents, Activists & Party Leaders Gather for Trainings, Discussions on Organizing, Getting Involved in Political Process

DETROIT — Today, the Michigan Democratic Party and 13th Congressional District Democrats, along with more than 150 local residents, activists, and party leaders, gathered in Detroit for the 13th Congressional District Mobilization Summit, held at Wayne County Community College.

Part of the Michigan Democratic Party’s Project 83 — a statewide effort to strengthen grassroots organization and party infrastructure from the ground up in all 83 Michigan counties — the summit brought together concerned citizens, area activists, organizers, and party leaders from the local, state, and national levels for a day of trainings and discussions on local organizing, campaigns, and getting involved in the political process.

Special guests and speakers participating in the summit included Congressman John Conyers, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, Westland Mayor William Wild, and Jaime Harrison, Associate Chair and Senior Counselor for the Democratic National Committee, as well as local party leaders and Michigan Democratic Party senior staff.

“We’re going to keep coming together at rallies, at protests, at marches, at town halls, and at the ballot box. We’re going to keep fighting back against this Republican fraud, and we’re going to fight our way forward to elect Democrats who will build the foundation for shared prosperity in the 21st century,” said Jaime Harrison, DNC Associate Chair and Senior Counselor.

In addition to remarks from Harrison and other special guests, the summit included workshops, trainings, and panel discussions on a wide array of topics, including a breakdown of both state and national party rules and infrastructures, field strategy and voter outreach, campaign finance and compliance, precinct-level organizing, and effective use of social media and message-building.

Discussing the day’s event, Jonathan Kinloch, Chair of the 13th District Democrats said, “This is all about building lasting relationships at the grassroots level and arming community leaders and local residents with the skills and tools to make their voices heard. Gone are the days of parachuting in during even years, focusing on turnout, and then retreating back to Lansing or D.C. the day after an election. We’re here to stay. And not just in Detroit, but in every corner of our state, because our number one priority is putting the people of Michigan first.”
