…and how can I do it?
So what is design? Is it really just making things pretty? A new color for my logo, some flat icons on my website…a brushed aluminum finish to my product? And if it is all of those things, how might design apply to my business…one that might not seem the most “creative” by trade like fashion, photography, or graphic design?
Don’t fret. Design isn’t just “making things pretty”, design is telling a story through each touch point of our business. It’s the way someone experiences your products or services. It is the aspect of business that pulls on the heartstrings of your market, that encourage your users to behave in a certain manner, and that is so visually appealing that they can’t miss it.
In our world, loads of companies are doing the exact same thing. The only thing that differentiates them is their story. The reason why they do what they do, how they do what they do, and how they want you to experience what they do when you do it. To start designing your business, think critically about what, how, and why you do what you do. Craft a story around that, one that is believable, relatable, and valuable to you, and then move into visualizing that story.
Visualizing your business’s story is your time to design. Move from words to visuals of each touch point of your product or service. This may manifest itself as pictures, diagrams, colors, charts, videos, gifs, interactive infographics…the list goes on. You have to choose what is best to communicate your what, how, and why to your user. This is the creative part…and you don’t have to be a natural born Jony Ive to do it. With your story as your foundation, you can always draw upon it for inspiration, direction, and for clarification if you lose your way.
Design is design because there is no written formula or theory that can tell you how to choose your problem nor how to find a solution for said problem. Design is design because there is no one solution either! The creativity is in the process. It’s finding a problem and attacking it in only a way that you know how. The word needs your perspective and your passion. So don’t think that design only fits into certain categories, start designing your business today…and if you need some help, MINWO can advise.
