Canucks off to surprisingly good start
The Vancouver Canucks have surprised many with a successful start this season.
Going into this NHL season, the Canucks were deemed the worst team in the league by many people. The Canucks were given the worst odds in the NHL to win the Stanley Cup. Surprisingly, the Canucks have done pretty well in their first 9 games of the season.
After 9 games this season, the Canucks hold a record of 5–3–1, placing them third in the Pacific Division behind the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Los Angeles Kings. Although it is very early in the season, Canucks fans should enjoy the success thus far by their home team.
Derek Dorsett is known as a 4th line player in the NHL and many fans disagree with coach Travis Green’s decision to even put Dorsett in the line up. Despite these doubts, Dorsett has been the biggest surprise for the Canucks this season, putting up 5 goals in 9 games. Although this success from Dorsett is sure not to last long, it’s a pleasant surprise for Canucks fans to start the season.
Brock Boeser was already a fan favourite to start the season and fans were appalled when he was not in the line up on opening night. This quickly changed and Boeser has been very pleasant to watch so far this season, putting up 2 goals and 4 assists in 7 games.
With no established starting goaltender, the Canucks will be riding the hot hand this year between Jacob Markstrom and Anders Nilsson. Both goalies have played well so far this season, but it is Nilsson’s league-leading 2 shutouts that stands out. Nilsson has started 3 games this season and despite being pulled in one of those games, he looked very solid in the other 2 games that he recorded a shutout.
It is not likely that the Canucks will continue this success and the chances of them making the playoffs are slim, but for now Canucks fans should be happy at how well the team is playing, and enjoy it while it lasts.
