This morning I had a brush with infamy — I saw Brock Turner when I was biking to work.

What an amazing piece. Thank you for your introspective words and your ability to recognize your privilege. So many people are quick to get defensive when the word “privilege” is brought up. Having privilege doesn’t make you a bad person. As a white, straight, cis-woman, I also experience a lot of privilege in my life. Things start to go south, however, when privilege is left unchecked and people start to believe it’s been earned and therefore deserved, which can then bridge into a sense of entitlement, with empathy in scarce supply. But when we check our privilege, we create empathy. So thank you for that.
