How to: Working in Google Translate Community service for improving your language translations

About one month ago, I was maintain training newsletter regarding work in Google Translate Community to helping to add new languages and to improve translations in Google Translate Service. It was quite successful and now I want to share with you those training materials. I think it will be helpful to all people who want to help improving translation quality of Google Translate.

For working with Community you need a Google account. After this go to main page of Google Translate Community translate.google.com/community

Here we can see how can we help to improve translation quality. There are several types of corrections, that we can do. Some of them can change to more difficult types by dividing:

  • Translate. You need to translate languages that you select. In my case it is kazakh — english and english — kazakh
  • Match. You need to find matched words in translation type.
  • Rate. You need to rate translation quality by four degree.
  • Compare. Compare several versions of translations and select best one.
  • Validate. Select correct or not this translation.
  • Multi Validate. You need to choose all answers that were correct in this translation.

If you can not understand theory, don’t worry, in practice it was much easier. And after completing several corrections you can find the best type of correction in that you are best. For example I always try to answer to several types of corrections that I know perfect.

This is about theory and let’s go to practice. We need to authorize through button and we can access to main panel of Google Translate Community.

For working with Google Translate Community you need to know at least two languages — English and your native language. Because most of translations were work through English.

By pressing My languages button we need to check all languages that we know. I check three of them — English, Russian and Kazakh. Did you see the * symbol near the Kazakh language? It means that this language is in testing mode and not available to public translations.

After this we can see menu of corrections with several types of them. As we can see for different language couples we have a different correction types.

As I can say earlier there are several types of corrections. First type of correction is — Translate. It is most difficult type of correction, because we need excellent knowledge in two languages. Advice says that we need to type one version of translation without any commas and personal data.

The next type of corrections — Rate. In this correction we need to rate translation quality by four degree.

Third type of correction — Validate. We need to choose one of answers — Does this translation correct or not.

Also there is a more difficult type of this correction called — Multi Validate. You need to choose all answers that were correct in this translation.

As you can see in all types of corrections we have also a one additional answer — Skip. You can choose it when you do not exactly know answer, or if you have any doubts.

During the checking the answers some of types of corrections can appear or some of types can disappear. It is because of updating the number of mirror translations in languages that you select.

Also you can see your correction statistics in My answers section.

It is all. This is my small, but I think useful training regarding Google Translate Community. And I am sure that this training will be helpful to all users who want to add their native languages to Google Translate, because if there are more volunteers in this Community then more chances that your native language will be added to service in short period of time.

Thank you for your attention.
