APNGOptimizer Mac App Review:
Many years ago, I took a web design course. Within this course, we were taught the very basics of HTML coding and how to create and optimize images to make a website more interesting. One of the best rules I learned was that people lost interest in your site if it takes too long to load. So, even though you want to hold a viewer’s visual interest, you don’t want to lose them because your images weigh your site down. With that in mind, it’s very important to make sure your file sizes are as small as they can be.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of adding too much to a site. One of the more fun and exciting items one can add is animation. There are a couple of ways to accomplish this — Animated GIF or APNG. The advantage of the APNG file format over the Animated GIF is that the APNG can handle a transparent background, while a GIF cannot. The trade off is that an APNG file is not quite so compressed and the file size is larger. Fortunately, there are programs like APNGOptimizer that can help shrink the file so that it’s more manageable.
APNGOptimizer is a very easy to use app from Romany Soft that does just what the name suggests — it optimizes APNG files. The process is very simple.
1. Select a file. Once you have selected your file, you open up APNGOptimizer and select it from within the app. It seems like you can drag and drop the file into the app, but I’ve not seen one of my files actually open when I’ve tried this process. I have to manually open it using the browse function of the software.
2. Once the file has been selected and opened inside the program, you then simply click “Start”. The file will be analyzed and then saved out. During this process, you are asked to name the file and select a destination for output. The file will be revealed in the finder once it’s been saved out.
That’s the entire process. It’s very simple and it only takes a few clicks to finish out a file conversion. The file I worked with started out as 184kb and ended up with 135kb for its file size. APNGOptimzer also shows you the file size comparison after the conversion is complete.
APNGOptimizer is a very handy, easy to use app that can really save you some valuable space. It retails for $2.99 and is available in the Mac App Store.
