GRIFFIN BreakSafe Breakaway Power Cable REVIEW

BreakSafe provides a strong, safe charging cable for USB-C devices.

I’ve been a fan of Griffin products for many, many years. In fact, one of the first accessories I bought when I started driving was a Griffin RF receiver. I’ve always been impressed by the quality of their craftsmanship and the care they take with the details of their products. Today, I’m happy to be reviewing the BreakSafe Breakaway Power Cable by Griffin. It’s designed to save your laptop from a bad fall. Several years ago, Apple integrated this same thinking into their power cables with the MagSafe connector. Their cables connect to laptops using a magnetic connection. Should something pull on the cable, the cable breaks away without pulling the computer along with it. It is with this in mind that Griffin created BreakSafe.

The BreakSafe cable is made specifically to work with USB-C Laptops like the Apple MacBook. It’s a 6-foot cable that has a quick-release magnetic connector at one end. The cable itself is also quite durable and thicker than the standard USB-C cable from Apple. It’s a black cable with aluminum fittings on the ends. The cable is rated up to 60 watts (20 volts at 3 amps) of power and is compatible with Apple’s MacBook (12″) and other USB-C devices like the Google Chromebook Pixel. The cable is strictly intended for charging purposes and not compatible with video/audio needs.

When I first used the cable for charging my MacBook, I found it to be quite easy to use. It doesn’t seem to tangle badly or collect excess heat on the connector ends. Griffin has engineered this cable so that you can only connect the magnet one way — only one end has the magnetic connector. This ensures that the cable’s polarity is consistent with the power supply it’s attached to.

The BreakSafe cable continues the great legacy of Griffin products and what they can do for emerging technologies. I was able to charge my MacBook easily with the cable and had some added security knowing that it was safe from falls. The BreakSafe cable works well with the MacBook and I’m looking forward to using it with other USB-C compatible devices.
