KRK Systems Rokit Speakers REVIEW

Rokit speakers provide a solid product with a superior sound quality.

Growing up, my house was filled with music. My dad had a nice vinyl collection and a stereo receiver that connected to gigantic amplified speakers. As technology has evolved and gotten smaller, so have the speaker set-ups. I’ve never had professional-grade speakers at home, but I’ve always appreciated good sound quality and look for the best possible option when it comes to audio quality.

I was recently at a local music store and saw a set of the Rokit speakers by KRK Systems. KRK specializes in studio monitor speaker systems that deliver design and performance to the end user. It was refreshing to find a company that specializes in making great monitors and not just a company that happens to make them.

When the Rokit speakers arrived I was shocked by their actual size. I had the opportunity to test out the Rokit 4 G3 and Rokit 8 G3 speakers. The Rokit 4’s are the smallest in the Rokit line. They are designed to work as desktop speakers, but they are still large. Just one speaker weighs about 8.5 pounds and sits 8 inches tall. The Rokit 8 is the big brother to the Rokit 4. It is a full studio monitor and sits 15.5 inches tall and weighs 26.5 pounds. They are very solid speakers, to say the least.

Once I pulled one out of the box, I found that the monitors have a gorgeous finish and style to them. They have smooth, clean lines and a hint of color (yellow highlights) to really stand out as quality, stylish speakers. Like most traditional speakers, the back of the box houses all the controls. There are three knobs — HF Level Adjust, LF Level Adjust, and Volume. The inputs are also on the back — balanced (TRS and XLR) and unbalanced (RCA). The placement and quantity of controls were exactly the same on both the Rokit 4 and Rokit 8.

One thing to note here is that cables were not included with the speakers. This was a little bit of a downer for me as it meant that I had to search for the right cables, but is understandable why cables may not be included. The power cable was included.

Getting the speakers set up for testing wasn’t difficult. As I just mentioned, I had to track down the right cables in order to connect anything to them, but other than that, hooking up various devices (I primarily used by phone and computer) was not difficult. Within just a few minutes, I had my phone connected to the Rokit 4 (you can do this by using a standard RCA-to-Stereo Mini connector cable) and was playing some music through it.

The sound was incredible and the volume couldn’t be beaten. The Rokit speakers are self-powered and have a 1″ soft dome tweeter and a 4″ glass-Aramid composite woofer. That combined provided a very full, rich sound. The Rokit 4’s are specially designed to give smaller desk spaces the same big sound that the Rokit 8 does. Even though they are really intended for a studio space, these speakers could be used for personal use, too. I could see gamers really enjoying the extra boost of sound power or music lovers integrating these speakers into their stereo systems. The sound quality is really incredible and can’t be beaten for this size/market of studio monitors.

The Rokit speakers by KRK Systems are the best high-quality, professional-grade speakers I’ve had the privilege of testing. We have a friend who owns a recording studio and the Rokit monitors are his speakers of choice for producing tracks. They are solid pieces of equipment and while I would love to see a few tweaks made to the design (handles on the side for easy portability, cables being included, maybe Bluetooth integration on the smallest speaker size), the build quality and sound clarity really speak for themselves.
