Satechi Aluminum Type C Micro/SD Card Reader Review
Satechi Aluminum Type C Micro/SD Card Reader is the perfect solution for accessing your SD and Micro SD cards on MacBooks.

No matter how wireless of a society we become, there are still lingering areas where we have to ‘plug in’ to capture our data. For example, I went to scan a document on our all-in-one printer and found that in order to get it to my computer — even though it’s a wireless printer — I had to either plug my computer in through USB or insert an SD card. Unfortunately, the increasingly wireless world has also produced the efficient, but at times hindering, design of the new Apple MacBook.
The one thing that really turned me off of the new MacBook was the single USB Type C input/output port intended for power and data transfer. I suffered through making a decision about purchasing the new MacBook because of this feature and whether or not the weight difference between it and my 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro was worth the effort. Well, I can definitely say that it is now that I’ve toted around that 15-inch laptop through a week of CES. And, since its release, the technology community has stepped up and started creating a lot of accessories that make it possible to connect to various devices through that USB C port. Even thought the thought of dragging a bunch of different dongles around though is a bit off-putting to me, too, I have come to the conclusion that a couple of extra accessories is worth the massive weight difference between the two laptop choices. Fortunately for me, Satechi makes a wonderful multi-card reader to match the new MacBook.
A part of its newly released Metallic Series, the Aluminum Type C Micro/SD Card Reader is ideal for the MacBook user who doesn’t want two devices when one will do. It allows for both Micro SD and Standard SDHC cards to be used in one little thumb drive size device. Not only will it read/write to both types of memory cards, but it will also do so simultaneously. It’s designed to mimic the design of Apple products and does so quite beautifully. With its sleek aluminum body, the Satechi Aluminum Type C Micro/SD Card Reader is available in three colors — Space Grey, Silver, and Gold. Being a fan of the gold color that Apple has chosen as one of its flagship colors, I was very excited to test out the card reader in the same shade as the MacBook.
The card reader measures 1.88″ x 0.75″ x 0.31″ and only weighs 10 grams. The function of the card reader is quite simple. It has a detachable cap that has small indentions for an easier grip. I really hope other companies that make similar devices will take notice of this feature because it really does make it much easier to take the top off and replace it. When the top is removed, it reveals a standard USB Type C male adapter. The card reader slides into the MacBook quite easily, but feels very secure.
The Micro SD card port is on the bottom of the card reader, while the SD card slot is on the side. There is really only one way the card can be inserted so you don’t have to worry about mixing up the cards in their respective slots. I found that the computer read the cards accurately and quickly. All in all, the Aluminum Type C Micro/SD Card Reader from Satechi is a solid accessory for your MacBook. If was going to make a suggestion for future updates of this product, I would suggest that some way to keep the lid together with the card reader when it’s plugged into a computer would be great. As it is, when you remove the cap, you set it aside and you could quite easily lose track of it. Other than that, the card reader is great.
The Aluminum Type C Micro/SD Card Reader made my life a bit easier knowing that instead of two devices, I could carry one super portable, lightweight one.
