Interactive Design Stage 2 : eLearning Activity

For the second stage of this brief, I will be creating an eLearning activity for employees working in a company that will partake in the National Ride Two Work Day who as a company encourages Australians to start riding to work and promotes commuting by bike as a regular habit. For the task to be complete participants need to complete the task to a certain standard to gain the certificate required to participate in the event. The eLearning activity will need to repeatable but also enjoyable for the user.

The Goal

The goal of this project is to create an eLearning resource that promotes safety, promotes commuting by bike as a regular habit riding in Australia for employees in a company.

The Objectives

The objectives for this project would be:

  1. Have users learn about rules of riding a bike to work by the completion of the eLearning activity.
  2. Have users learn about the types of crashes that can happen when riding a bike to work by the completion of the eLearning activity.
  3. Test the users knowledge of the road rules and regulations for riding a bike, to gain a pass that will give the user the completion certificate.

The Specs

The specifications for this project include the following:

  1. A planned budget.
  2. The eLearning activity will appear on the Bicycle Network site.
  3. The styling for the activity needs to follow the National Ride2Work site style guide.
  4. The eLearning activity needs to be fully built and functional for the final product.
  5. The eLearning activity needs to appeal and be appropriate for the intended target audience.
  6. Completely digitally (also known as being accessible via the web).
  7. The user must be able to complete the activity with no interference or help.
  8. eLearning activity needs to be repeatable.
  9. The activity must contain assessment capabilities.
  10. The activity must give a certificate to the user on completion if they have gained the pass.
  11. Final build is due in week 11, testing will commence in the last two week with everything being due in week 13.

Improvements

From the last e-learning activities here are some of the things we can improve since last time.

  • The activity needed to be more engaging, not just have the same kind of question over and over again.
  • Repetition is good, but there needs to be a separation at some point.
  • more explanation when needed, whether, that meaning what to do or more detail in the questions.
  • The background were quite simple, maybe with a bit more detail they would be a bit clearer as for the meaning of them.
  • Overall the e-learning activity worked well, but the pages took a while to load, so maybe it would be best next time to use a program that worked faster.

Persona

The persona I created outlined one of the types of people this eLearning activity will target.

Learning Styles of Persona

Visual: Visual learner, learn best with learning styles in which ideas, concepts, data, and other information are associated with images and techniques. Visualisations in a good way for a visual learner to remember something.

For example: They are attracted to colour and spoken language, like stories, that have imagery.

Refector: Reflective learning is the process of internally examining and exploring an issue of concern, triggered by an experience, which creates and clarifies meaning in terms of self, and which results in a changed conceptual perspective.

For example: Their understanding can include a range of activities, including self-review, peer review, and Personal Development Planning.

Inspiration

The inspiration that i had the idea behind this quiz was a test, that was about “who tweeted” that quote, where you had to choose whether Donald Trump or Kanye West Tweeted it. It was funny and entertaining, and that it what i based my quiz off.

Research Links

For my research i used these link to find the information but also craft the questions as well as the answers. Especially the second link for all the types of crashes that bikes and cars are in.

Style Guide

Storyboards

this story board is how my quiz set out. The fifteen questions are going to be set out the same way, so that is why it looks so simple, but the second and third boards are repeated a total of fifteen times, this just showing that in a simple format.

Platform

For this activity, i have decided on the platform Qzzr, due to the fact that it will work perfectly with the elearning activity i want to create, and it allows me to add the elements that i want. For example having a question but also a description below it, also with a picture to insure the person has a clear understanding of what they are to do.

For the multiple choice answers, it will give two options in this case one for the driver and one for the rider. In which one will be correct and one will be wrong. Either way the correctly answer will show up, showing whether or not you got the question right through colour (red meaning wrong and green meaning correct).

This is an example sketch of what the question set up will look like.

Production

With creating my quiz a set it up quite simply within Qzzr with again a total of fifteen questions making it up.

The Layout on Qzzr.

With in each question, i had already prewritten all of the content and just put it into the section they fit into, but the problem was the answer section had a word limit, so i had change things a bit, but that was ok.

I had a folder of the images included so they were in easy access to put into the quiz.

Time & Budget Estimates

To work out my time and plan my budget, i used a Trello to plan everything out and show the different stages and step that i was going to create through out this inter project.

Over all i stuck to the time line pretty well, except for underestimating how long it took to make the quiz or qzzr. It has a pretty bad lag, so it took twice as long to create it, then i thought it would, taking time away from recreating my own imagery and having to use the ones a site used as an example.

User Testing

For user testing i conducted two user tests, to test how well my quiz works it three different way

  1. That the test actually works and runs correctly
  2. That the content makes sense
  3. That people are able to understand and complete the activity

Results

From my User Tests i found that the writing needs to be condensed so that people aren't just skimming through it but actually reading it.

Other Points Learned:

  • short and sweet is sometimes best
  • people will not read the explanation if they got the question correct.
  • a video or animation would be better then just a picture, because found it hard to put them selfs into the situation (the crashes)

Feedback

Here is the pre-test and post-test questionnaire.

Test One with a Kinesthetic Learner named Emma.
Test One with a Visual Learner named Dayna.

Conclusion

Overall i think this e-learning activity turned out really well, from the design and application on it, to the information shown and just the pure quality of it. It still does need some improvement in the writing on the question and level on understanding it has for people to understand (the test subjects found it quite hard to comprehend , but i again i am happy with how it turned out. I think it completes the brief i was given, and would be a great for people to use to get an understanding of bike safety and the road rules.
