On December 24, 1971, on flight LANSA 508 from Lima, Peru to Pucallpa, Peru, a lightning strike, recorded as the deadliest lightning strike in aviation history, killed all 90 people on board. Only one survived: a 17-year-old girl named Juliane Koepcke. Incredibly, the girl who survived the crash fought for 11 days in the Amazon Rainforest. The incident took place hours after Juliane Korpcke’s high school graduation ceremony and prom finished. Juliane boarded a plane with her mother to see and celebrate with her father. There was a pretty heavy storm during the trip and her mother was terrified, but Juliane, who likes to travel by plane, thought it was nothing to worry about.

With the lightning, the engine of the plane broke down and the plane began to fall. Passengers screamed when they saw the plane’s fuselage shatter. Meanwhile, Juliane had fallen from the plane with her seat belt on. As she fell into the forest from a height of 10,000 feet, her seat turned like a helicopter, thanks to the wind blowing, and the descent speed slowed down. Juliane fainted when she fell to the ground and couldn’t remember what had happened for the next 20 hours. When she woke up, she saw that her seat belt had come off.
