If you have read my previous articles, I told you to speak incorrectly… But I didn’t tell you how to learn to actually speak.

- If I want to speak, I have to sing?

- Basically..

What does it mean to learn to speak?

When I say that I will tell you how to learn to speak correctly I don’t mean grammaticaly correct speaking.

I will tell you how to sound correctly while speaking. Authentic pronounciation. That’s what I’m after in this post.

So how do we do it?

Instead of spending hours trying to repeat correctly native speakers and having cringeworthy accent anyway.. Try singing songs in the language you are learning. The faster the song the better, but start wherever you feel comfortable. And remember to have fun.

What are the rules?

The rules are simple:

  1. You need to learn to sing a song from memory without looking at lyrics.
  2. If you make any error — try again. From the begining.

I suggest you learn singing the song line by line.

Why do it in this way?

While speaking, you can make an error and it’s fine.

While singing, if you make an error — you‘re off-bit.

A song has a rythm. If you mispronounce a word or put an accent in the wrong place — it doesn’t work and you can hear it.

Language also has its own rythm and dynamics.

When you are trying to sing along with the singer you are learning how to pronounce words, because if you do it differently you can hear that something sounded incorrectly, it’s intuitive.

You just keep singing — your brain will do the learning.

What will you achieve?

Try to learn how to sing at least one song, and see how your pronounciation changes.

This method is for people who struggle with their accent.

If you already speak with proper accent, then this won’t do much for you. But you can still have fun singing. Who doesn’t like music?
