Founder Friday — Meet Colin from Canviz
What did you think you wanted to be when you were in HS?
I wanted to work in the video game industry.
What did you study in college and what was your first job?
I studied computer science at the Rochester Institute of Technology. They have a great co-op program, and my first job in the industry was with the USDA creating a digital system to replace the paper-based workflow their inspectors used.
What did you do in your previous life, prior to co-founding Canviz?
I worked as a software engineer at a number of social media and video game startups in the Bay Area.
What inspired you to start Canviz?
The vision of enabling creators who work digitally to make a livelihood off their work, as well as helping artists of all kinds get exposure and connect with their audience.
What has been your biggest challenge growing your company?
The learning curve and time management involved with having to wear so many different hats.
What has been your biggest win?
Whenever we receive feedback from a user telling us we nailed it for them and helped them do something that wasn’t possible for them before.
When you’re not working on your company, how do you spend your time?
Hanging out with family and friends (without them this wouldn’t be possible), art events, reading, cooking, keeping up on tech, and playing games.
Best place you’ve ever traveled to?
How would your mother or maternal figure describe your personality?
“Curious and reflective with a great sense of humor!”
Your favorite get sh*t done quote —
If you hear a voice within you saying, “You are not a painter,” then by all means paint, boy, and that voice will be silenced, but only by working. -Vincent van Gogh
