Statement by Malaka Shwaikh
In the past four weeks, the Israeli lobby has not only tried to smear me but there were numerous calls to have me sacked from three officers’ positions I was democratically elected to at Exeter University’s Students’ Guild. A thorough investigation under legal advice has subsequently determined that I have not brought the Students’ Guild into disrepute as alleged by those who sought my dismissal, and so I remain a member of the Trustee Board and continue to hold the positions I was elected to.
I would like to thank the Guild for looking in a clear and unbiased manner at my case, and not being swayed by the campaign which a small number of individuals have waged against me on false grounds.
The past four weeks have been very difficult for me. I have been harassed viciously, and my own academic work and work for the Guild have been impacted. I have undergone this ordeal far from my family and my home. I would like to thank all those who have supported me throughout this time — the hundreds of Exeter students and lecturers, and members of communities around this country, who have stood by me.
I would also like to thank Exeter’s student body, as the CAA fallacious claims did not deter them from electing me to various positions, including member of the trustee board (for the 2nd year), as well as National Union Student delegate and Exeter Guild’s Vice President.
Throughout this period, I have raised my voice in support of the causes I believe in. I have represented my people, the Palestinians, in this country and abroad and have spoken out against every form of racism and fascism on a demonstration on Exeter campus.
I will never be silenced by those who resort to falsehoods and misrepresentation. Campaigning for justice, for Palestine and globally, will always be a part of who I am. Other than seeking legal advice about redress, I now look forward to preparing for my future role as the democratically elected representative of all the students at the University of Exeter. I hope that I will receive the support of all those who are true friends of the student community.
