I said the following on an article that chided Senator McCain for casting a vote to begin debate…
For the record, I am a fervent liberal! I support the ACA only because it is better than nothing at all. I prefer a single payer system. I could say much more on the topic of healthcare, but the focus of this comment is Senator McCain’s thoughts on working together.
I have read many of the comments expressing disappointment in Senator McCain’s vote to proceed with debate on the various legislative abominations the Republicans are proposing for healthcare. I agree with the sentiment that these proposals should never see the light of day.
All that said, I am compelled to applaud Senator McCain for his words supporting compromise and cooperation. Even when his actions belie those words, he is a highly respected voice for the Republicans, and we sorely need Republican voices supporting compromise and cooperation!!!
As terrible as the health care situation is in America, and it is bloody awful, the divisive tribal partisan quagmire (on every issue, not just health care) in which we are mired is even worse. It is nothing less than the “Second American Civil War.” If we continue down this hateful vitriolic counterproductive path, we will destroy our society and everything the founders of our country fought for.
I don’t expect Senator McCain to adopt my progressive views, nor should he expect me to adopt his conservative views, but anything he may do to encourage his conservative colleagues to find a cooperative middle ground wins my respect and appreciation.
Now that he has cast the deciding vote to kill this ideological attack on average Americans, I must say it again… “Senator McCain, you have my respect and appreciation!”
