On Giving Up
A whole generation of people, left behind.
Did technology really pass them by, or did they just give up?
A man stopped me recently, as I was walking my dog. Three drinks spread between two hands, he asked me how old I am. Did I consider myself one of those “millennials”? I don’t consider myself anything, I said.
He questioned what I do for a living. “Don’t tell me something with computers.”
“Oh, very much something with computers,” I answered.
I saw in that moment a whole generation who felt like him. A wide range of people who were not too old to have given up as technology came of age, but they did.
“The world has just changed so radically, and we’re all running to catch up.” ~ Dr. Alan Grant, Jurassic Park, 1993
The world keeps changing radically, moment by moment. Some of us keep running, realizing the marathon of change that living in this world entails.
But so many have fallen breathless, by the sidelines. They stopped to catch their breath for too long, and now running feels impossible. They’ve given up.
Is this what happens?
One day, do we all just give up?
Or will you keep running? Fighting on, struggling to catch your breath, into the future?
