Sri Hanuman Puja

Hanuman Puja is one of the most popular Hindu rituals. It is performed to remember and worship Lord Hanuman, the god of courage who is considered to be a great devotee of Lord Rama. The puja is usually performed on Tuesdays or Saturdays and requires a number of items, such as a Hanuman idol, a red cloth, flowers, incense, ghee, etc.

Lord Hanuman, also known as Maruti, Anjaneya, Bajarngbali, Sankatmochan, pavan Putra etc., was born on the purnima tithi (full moon day of the chaitra month, Lord Hanuman is one of the revered deities in the Kaliyuga. It is asaid that he is a chiranjeevi (immortal).

  1. Rise early and take a bath.
  2. Do Dhyana (meditation) followed by Sankalpa (take a pledge that you would sincerely perform Hanuman puja).
  3. Then, on a wooden chowki covered with a piece of fresh yellow cloth, place the idol or image of Lord Hanuman facing east. Light an oil/ghee lamp.
  4. Invoke Lord Ganesha and seek his blessings for a hurdle-free Hanuman Puja.
  5. Sprinkle some water on the idol or image of Lord Hanuman. Use water, raw milk, water, honey, curd, ghee etc., for doing the Abhishek only if the idol is made of metal). Gently wipe the murti with a piece of fresh cloth.
  6. Offer a fresh piece of yellow or red cloth or a kalava to the deity.
  7. Offer flowers, incense sticks and dhoop, oil lamp
  8. Chant Hanuman Mantras and recite the Hanuman Chalisa.
  9. Offer bhog to God. It could be fruits or any sattvic recipe that you have prepared. (You may also offer the Tamboolam, which consists of paan, supari, one brown coconut, Dakshina, banana and/or some fruits)
  10. Stand up on your feet and turn around from your right (Do one parikrama)
  11. Perform the aarti
  12. Offer flowers and do pranam. Seek forgiveness for any error you may have made during the puja.
