Organ transplant is a surgical procedure that is performed to replace a damaged organ with a healthy organ. There are many types of organ transplant depending on the organs such as heart transplant & kidney transplant. Organ donation is donating a healthy organ by a person for transplantation. More information on organ transplantation.

Facts say that most organ failure can only be treated with organ transplant. In the procedure of organ transplant, first the patient enrolls on the waiting list for the transplant. Only after getting an appropriate organ, the damaged organ will get replaced by the healthy one from a donor.

It was a new hope for the people who were suffering from organ failure to get a new and healthy life. Beneath an organ donation fact that one donor can save eight lives, only a few people — in need of organ donation — have received benefits from organ transplantation.

Let us now understand few bitter organ transplant or donation facts; Each year, 150000 people await a kidney transplant but only 5000 get one. In the country of 1.2 million people person as organ donor per million populations is just 0.08. Each year, 5 lakh people die due to inaccessibility to healthy organs.

Apart from these bitter facts, black marketing is also something that is also holding us back from doing this noble cause. It is saddening to mention that nearly 10,000 organs are traded every year in India, in which kidneys hold 75 percent.

Except these fact, there are also some questions that always put us in dilemma. Few of them are:

  • If I get admitted to a hospital due to some issue and doctors find that I want to be a donor. Will they try to save my life?

When a person gets admitted to a hospital, the number one priority for the doctors is to save his/her life. The transplant team will not make take any action until all lifesaving efforts have failed and death has been determined.

  • I have a history of medical illness. Can I donate my organs?

The decision to donate or use an organ depends on many medical criteria. It may come out that certain organs are not healthy enough for donation, but other organs and tissues may be fine. The transplant experts are the best people who can determine whether your organs and tissues are appropriate for transplantation.

  • I am too old or just 18. Am I eligible for organ donation?

There is no age limit for organ donation. Organs can be donated by someone as young as a new-born or as old as an80-year-old.

Learn how a baby — Teddy Houston — died only 100 minutes after birth, but died a hero by donating organs.

  • What organs can be donated while alive?

Kidneys are the most common organs donated by living donors. Other organs that can be donated by living donors include partial liver, pancreas or intestine and a lobe of a lung.
