Is there more to social media marketing than Facebook? You bet! LinkedIn, the professional networking site with 467 million members, isn’t just for corporate recruiters seeking their next hire. LinkedIn is a great place for small companies like yours to generate new business opportunities — if you know how to use it.

“Both business-to-business and business-to-consumer companies can find prospective customers by carefully choosing the content that they share, the groups they join and the people they link in with,” said Christine Perkett. Perkett owns the marketing agency PerkettPR and teaches digital media at Northeastern University in Boston.

Perkett outlined four steps to help small businesses begin connecting with prospects and partners on LinkedIn:

Step 2: Search for and connect with everyone you know that has a profile on LinkedIn, and follow the pages of companies you have an interest in working with.

Step 3: Share posts about your industry, how-to articles or other interesting content your potential customers and partners may find useful.

Step 4: Join groups that are relevant to your industry or your clients, and participate in group discussions.
