The caves of Nerja

Nerja is a town with so much to offer, turquoise beaches and water sports are what attracts, but one of the most fascinating attractions it has to offer are its Cuevas de Nerja (Caves of Nerja).

These breathtaking cavees were casually discovered in 1959 by a group of fiive friends and have become one of the most famous attractions in all of Spain for locals and tourists alike.

The limestone caves are four km long and 35 km wide, with two different areas, and notably boast the world’s longest and largest stalactite in its Cataclysm Hall.

Reserving tickets online is absolutely essential as there is very limited access available to the caves, and they close early, especially in winter. In winter, the caves open from 9am to 4pm, and in summer from 9am to 6:30pm. You can choose to visit the caves on a simple walking tour, or on the hop-on-hop-off Cueva Tren, a train which takes you through the caves. You can also make use of Malaga car hire.

In summer, a series of special concerts and ballets are held inside the caves as part of the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de las Cuevas de Nerja, which takes place from June to July.

Getting to the caves is easy, and they are well sign-posted. They are located 3 km north of town. If you are thinking of hiring a car, you can get a good car hire Malaga.
