You’re jumping to the wrong conclusion — he may or may not be an alcoholic, but that’s irrelevant.

Exactly. Not all people that have problems with drinking are alcoholics. I think how they respond to the problem determines that. If they cannot quit, if they keep doing the same things that result in the same (or worse) problems, then chances are good that they are. Which is not to say that a non-alcoholic that has a problem with drinking can’t benefit from AA.
