The desire to box people into a particular stereotype is very powerful. It allows for fast dissemination (correct or false), self-excuse from dealing with significant issues and the re-enforcement of confirmation bias.

It is rare for the most ardent protestors to have personal dealings with their targeted foes. Fear is strongest when based on the unknown, and as such education and familiarity is most required for a humane understanding. When coupled with proper listening, an understanding and empathetic approach is more likely to be achieved.
