You’ve given me some food for thought. I tend to have students use their devices in class, and some of the books are e-books which makes it difficult (but not impossible) to go lids down at this point in the semester. At the same time, I see exactly what you mean in terms of the fight against a biological stimulus. The struggle is real! I would need to set the standard at the beginning of the next semester and plan materials and expectations accordingly, of course.
On a side note, I teach your 2011 article “The Political Power of Social Media” in some of my classes. It’s been particularly helpful understanding the potential for platforms such as WeChat and WhatsApp to mobilize real-world action through text messaging.
