God, Edith calling Mary a bitch (twice!) was the most satisfying moment in the ENTIRE SERIES for me. Julian Fellows has always been so firmly in Mary’s corner, and the way she is frequently rewarded for being a selfish, cruel, conniving, heartless person because she does it stylishly is irritating (which is why Season 2 Mary was always my favorite Mary — she had been humbled and had to learn to be decent to people). In real life, though, I think the Ediths of the world have better lives: they aren’t always the richest or outrank everybody, but Edith has had to learn to be decent and resilient and big-hearted and resourceful, and those qualities will stand her in greater stead than a haircut and a keen-edged rejoinder.
