For our final day in Ghana, we started the day off with an exquisite breakfast at AH Hotel.

We then traveled 3 hours to Cape Coast Castle and had lunch at a nearby restaurant. The food was delicious and I got the chance to socialize with my fellow delegates and get to know them better.

Afterwards, we visited Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This castle in Cape Coast, Ghana was one of many “slave castles” that served as prisons and embarkation points for slaves en route to the Americas (the Caribbean, South America, and the U.S.). It is a historical wonder and it felt as if we traveled back in time and witnessed everything that happened in the castle.

We visited the “Door of No Return,” which is a passageway that slaves exit out of the castle and onto the ships setting off on the Middle Passage.

We also visited many dungeons, or “slave holes,’’ and it was jaw-dropping. The slave holes smelled like death and decay. It made the experience truly more breathtaking and genuine.

Enjoy the pictures below!

This is our tour guide telling us about different parts of the Cape Coast Castle.

Touring Cape Coast Castle was truly beautiful experience! There was even a Pan-African Museum within the castle! There was so much rich history of African and African-American culture within the museum. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take pictures of anything within the museum, but believe me, it was astonishing and astounding!

After our time at Cape Coast Castle, we then traveled to The Honorable Alfred Oko Vanderpuije’s house. It’s a big and beautiful house.

That is Dr. Vanderpuije’s mother-in-law and I. She is a vibrant woman who is full of energy.

All in all, Ghana was an eye-opening and fun trip! We learned a lot about the economy, culture, and history of Ghana! We had so much fun and excitement and the atmosphere was exuberant! We then had to go back to the hotel and go to sleep and get up early in the morning to fly back to New York City.

Perry Wilson, one of the NBMBAA delegates, and I.

We flew back to New York and we all went our separate ways BUT we still keep in contact with each other, to this day. We will always remember this trip with laughter, happiness, excitement, and wonder!

We flew back to New York on Friday, February 23rd, 2018.

I spent the weekend in New York City with a friend of mine, then I flew back to Memphis, TN on Sunday, February 25th, 2018.

This was truly a great trip and journey and I look forward to participating in future trips likes this!
