Visualization Exercises For a Winning Attitude Part 1
My friend and business coach, and someone who is partly responsible for the success of my marriage and business partnership solvency, is Larry Miller of Momentum Coaching. Following is one visualization technique Larry taught me to get through tough times:
Visualization 1: Joyful, Easy, Successful, Sustained, Integrated, and Important (JESSI)
Feelings and emotions are the most powerful communication mediums within our conscious and subconscious minds. Imagination and visualization can allow you to physically experience — in your body, mind, and spirit — how success feels.
Positive affirmations work when you eliminate the words try and want from your vocabulary. These words lack commitment and feeling. It’s not enough to say, “I’m going to try to get through this” or, “I want to stop being angry about that.” How does trying feel? How does wanting feel? What you feel is what you’ll get. You can get stuck in trying or wanting, or you can decide to feel successful. It’s your choice.
Here are the steps for the JESSII visualization and feeling exercise. This exercise takes no more than five minutes — you can do it while you’re driving, waiting for an appointment, getting ready in the morning, or anytime.
• Step 1: Envision the outcome you prefer, knowing how joyful, easy, successful, sustained, integrated, and important it is (JESSII).
• Step 2: Speak the outcome out loud, using the present tense and a positive tone.
• Step 3: Play the scene through; see and feel yourself succeeding.
• Step 4: Repeat the scene until you’re confident that you are successful.
• Step 5: Feel and express appreciation for what this is bringing to your life.
Keep index cards with these steps written out in brief. Anytime you feel down, go through the exercise by acknowledging what is causing the bad attitude. With a sense of gratitude, refocus your mind and feelings on what you prefer the outcome to be, not only for today, but throughout your life. Take charge of your emotions and feel clear, confident, and certain. When you are ready to visualize, post these steps where you can see them, such as in your car, at your desk, or somewhere on your phone.
