Hence, one deficiency in the current system of care here in the U.S. is the sheer lack of availability of adequate empathy, understanding and connection that relieves, even if only for a moment, the suffering of those with this sort of mental illness.

I hear what you’re saying. Empathy and attention are huge necessities in treatment, that unfortunately do sometimes get overlooked. For what it’s worth I’ve recently seen a large shift towards a more patient-centered paradigm. More and more providers are beginning to understand that patient-physician communication is essential. As healthcare becomes more and more competitive, I believe patient’s will reap the rewards of increased attention and understanding. Providers who are unable to give patient’s the experience that they want (and deserve) may very well find themselves soon without any patients.
