It’s poppy season

It’s that time of year when elderly veterans take to the streets, shopping centres and railway stations to sell poppies for Remembrance Day.

When I was young I did not understand what these old people were doing. “Wasn’t the War over?” I would ask myself. How little I knew.

I came across an old vet selling poppies and pins at our local supermarket. I stopped and made a donation. He reached into his box and offered me a pin. I put up my hand and declined. “Save it for the next person.” I explained.

He crossed his brows, slightly confused.

“Thank you, sir” he said.

I replied, now looking up at this face, “Please don’t call me “sir”. I should be calling you “sir”.”

His furrowed brow became smooth and he smiled. I walked off.
