What questions should I ask my interviewer? WELL IT DEPENDS…
Before we get into things, remember it always depends and there is no 100% correct answer. But, let’s get to it and add some context. So, before you come with your list of questions for your interviewer remember WHY you are doing this and the WHAT will follow.
- You are asking questions to open a conversation and change interview dynamics.
- You are asking questions to assess if you want to work at company X.
- You are asking questions to learn about the job/company/role/team.
- You are asking questions to unearth as much about the role as possible.
- You are asking questions to show you understand the role/job and have interest and relevant knowledge. This is where true dialogue happens.
- You are asking questions to exhibit your preparation and understanding of the role/company etc.
- You are asking questions because an interview is a two way street and you do not just want a job offer but you want to ensure fit.
Now of course there are others reason to ask questions, but these are my main reasons. A quick word of advice though, if you are struggling to formulate questions, take a step back and ask yourself “DOES THIS EXCITE ME?” If not, maybe you need to rethink your search. If so, it should not be so hard. Now of course we all fall on hard times/challenges etc. where we need a job for income/health benefits etc. In these cases it’s perfectly fine to forgo excitement. and one last quick word of advice. Ask OPEN ENDED questions.
Okay okay enough already I get the point. So what are some good questions…
I hear ya but rather then do some more typing I’ll add some helpful links as my goal is always to get one to understand WHYwe do something as opposed to WHAT to do!
