CEO Sundar Pichai claims the search company is interested in partnering with OEMs to build phones.

Rumors have it that Google will finally build an independent smartphone. But at Vox Media’s Code Conference, CEO Sundar Pichai dodged the question when asked about the company’s plan of independently launching the smartphones and answered that the company will continue working with “OEMs to make phones.”

It seems that American search engine giant is not ready to bring out in open any potential development concerning phone development. At the moment it nevertheless looks like phone makers collaborating with the Moutain View based organization might be safe from the company going after developing its phone.

Already, the US search engine developer has its own kind of play as far as a Google-designed phone in the project Nexus is concerned, but that is also built working in collaborating with other original equipment manufacturers. But it has offered the company the opportunity to bring the Android experience as well as specifications to that phone, while other phone makers have a chance to make changes and adjustments to the phone experience.

Essentially, the company can tell the phone maker what it must do with the phone, but at the end it is yet collaborating with an original equipment manufacturer to develop a phone. “Nexus, we are investing more effort into them,” Sundar said. “You’ll see us put more thought into Nexus devices, there are categories beyond phones, we’ll be opinionated where we need to be to push the category forward.”

It is natural to consider that Alphabet’s unit might be interested in working on its own phone. It’s biggest rival, Apple, has turned into the world’s most highly valued company thanks to its entire control over the iPhone user experience. Google invented the Android, so it would be logical if Larry Page’s organization controlled the full experience it may be in a position to do optimization of what it believes is the finest Android experience.

At the moment, it looks like the organization is good at working together with partners such as its Nexus Program. “Android is a very open ecosystem, the answer may not be a global one player answering it every part of the world,” Sundar stated. But if the search engine operator ever builds its phone, it might threaten the existence of organizations that develop on top of the company’s Android, as they would need to explore ways to change the experience in such a manner that it can pioneer a product better than that of Google’s.
