Twitter Faces Challenges In Removing Hate Speech From Platform

Twitter is facing difficulties in removing abusive comments and content entirely from its platform. It now takes help from other agencies to do so for it.

Twitter is facing a hard time keeping an eye on every harassing or offensive content posted on the platform and is now reaching out to other groups for help. These groups are now going to help the social media platform to adjust its security and safety and even attract more users to its website. It has established a trust and safety council, which was announced on Tuesday.

The new Trust and Safety Council is going to play as an advisory platform for Twitter Inc. bringing out efficient policies and products that will enable users to feel safer than ever. Millions of tweets are posted on the platform each day and it can be said without doubt that some of that would turn out to be bad. When it comes to managing these posts, it can be even harder to keep track of all the post made in one day.

A day was celebrated on the internet called ‘Safer Internet Day’ in more than 100 countries, where the social media network announced that it is changing its strategy and strictly overcoming offensive content posted online. The new council formed by the company is going to help it to reach this goal. It has community groups and researchers who will work together to make the platform a better, healthier place for the users.

Many new policies and changes are going to be witnessed this year when it comes to online harassment. New features will definitely be launched that will help do this as efficiently as possible. The CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey tweeted, “Twitter stands for freedom of expression, speaking truth to power, and empowering dialogue. That starts with safety.”

Twitter is being helped by various groups to remove online harassment completely, including Internet Watch Foundation, Safer Internet Center, and Samaritans. Gathering all the expertise together for one purpose will help it to reach its goal sooner than anticipated.

The company is going to extents to stop harassment because it was previously accused of being sympathetic towards ISIS groups and promoting terrorist content on its platform by not taking actions against them. Not just this but it was even accused of being irresponsible when it comes to offensive content regarding any users ethnicity, gender, race and other differences. The former CEO of the social media adverting platform agreed and admitted by saying that it is poor in handling trolls and has been quite bad at it for years now.

The use of social media platform is becoming widely common. People from all cultural backgrounds and countries use it. Debates between such users start very frequently not just on Twitter but almost every social platform in business. Thus, the government has also showed concern and came up with various laws to prevent such conflicts from arising. There have been reports of many individuals being arrested but this is the case in only developed countries, as others do not even have any laws to take actions against online hate speech.
