Volvo finds Tesla Autopilot feature as “unsupervised wannabe.”

The automotive giants are striving to come up with driver assisting functionalities that are devoted to minimizing the car accidents. At this point, Tesla Motors Inc. has only been successful in coming up with an innovative Autopilot feature that takes charge on motorways. Moreover, drivers are asked to redeem control in case of an emergency. This feature makes it easier to go on long routes on highways with less attention required whilst driving making the drive hassle free.

On the other hand, Volvo AB vouches to come up with something exemplary and better. While conducting an interview with The Verge, a senior tech leader of crash avoidance at Volvo, Mr. Trent Victor stated that the autopilot feature of TSLA is an “unsupervised wannabe.” According to him, the electric car giant is marketing the feature as a fully autonomous ride however it qualifies as semi-autonomous. Thus, the feature has kept the masses in delusion where it cannot really do what its boasting of.

An article was published by a top tier publication house recently which talked about Volvo’s efforts in sabotaging Tesla in the times to come. Moreover, they also interviewed Mr. Marcus Rothoff, the company’s autonomous driving project director who claimed that they are coming up with self-driven technology that will disrupt the industry completely.

The core feature that was highlighted by both the automotive experts was that Volvo is working on a vehicle that does not require human intervention at all. Contrary to Tesla, Volvo is among the first few companies that has taken complete responsibility for any injury or crashed caused by the car on autonomous mode. The courage and boldness flaunted by the company makes it an imminent threat for other automotive giants investing in this domain. This is not it but Mercedes and Google has also vowed to take complete ownership of its self-driven cars. Moreover, by the end of the decade, Volvo has plans to make all of its car “death proof”.

Mr. Victor is quite indifferent of the Tesla Autopilot feature which can be coined as Level 3 autonomy. According to him, the feature is controversial since the driver can switch to automotive mode as per his will. However, he needs to be alert all the time since he will have to resume control on a slight notice. This actually means that the feature is extremely unsafe since in a situation where the driver is occupied with something else will not be in the right frame of mind to take over complex situations. Moreover, it can also cause trauma for the driver.

On the other hand, Volvo is certain that it can offer Level 4 autonomy in cars where its drivers can sit back and relax even in situations of an emergency. The car will not just drive on their own but will ensure that the safety of the passenger is intact and it will also come to a smooth halt without the need of humans interfering. In case there is an emergency, the cars will park on the roads safely.
