Plan:

  1. Speaking Fluidly: I plan to speak more fluidly by practicing my presentation out loud. I will also put cues in to remind me the direction my presentation needs to go, while at the same time eliminating the robotic nature of memorizing the whole speech. From the Reddit source, I learned that social media use over time can affect the manner one communicates in a negative way. Reducing use and reading longer works of literature will have beneficial outcomes over time.
  2. Body Posture: I have a bad habit of leaning to one side while standing, which according to “Public Speaking Tips-Posture,” tells my audience I don’t want to be there. To fix this, I will make an active effort to distribute my weight equally between each foot. In addition, I will consult the walls around me to straighten my spine to their angle. It is crucial to send good non-verbal messages to my audience, and posture, in my opinion, is the most important way to do this.

Reflection

Speech #1: Oral Interpretation of William Carlos Williams

Team Feedback:

Content — My team thought I should have reflected on each poem after I read it. I would have loved to do this, but time was very limited and it wasn’t a necessary point in the prompt.

Delivery — They thought my movement was good.

Structure — My team wanted reflection on each poem.

Teacher Feedback:

You liked the contrast between the poems I selected. You suggested that I use even more variation in my tone to express emotion. You liked my end statement, and wanted something similar at the beginning of my speech to draw the audience in. You thought I had good pace and pitch change.

Personal Reflection:

I thought this oral interpretation went very well. I was passionate about my subject, which helped with many things, such as helping speech flow from my thought more fluidly, and easing my nerves because I felt I got to share something rather than be forced to explain it in front of an unfamiliar class. Giving an oral interpretation as my first speech was a great choice, because the origin is very structured, which leaves me worry-free about not getting to the point or having bad content. I think I accomplished the goals I set up for myself, and will now look to set up new ones around structure and prosody.

Speech #2: Current event… The March for Science!

Team Feedback:

Content — My team liked my use of statistics and factual data about the events that led up to the March for Science.

Delivery — They said I had good posture and maintained strong eye-contact throughout.

Structure — My team thought I had a solid structure that was easy to follow throughout the different sections.

Teacher Feedback:

You liked how I played with the hand I was dealt, as Margy gave a great speech on the March for Science right before me. You said it was nice how our speeches were different. You agreed with my team in that my structure was followable. You noticed a bit of hedging in my pitch, and I noticed it too. I said I think I picked it up from my older brother, who always explains things to me using a higher pitch at the end. You thought I had good, variating eye-contact.

Personal Reflection: I thought my current event speech went well. My posture was strong, but I did have a few filler words. I thought I was prepared just the right amount. I need to work on how I start some sentences with the word, “Um.” I also need to focus on ending my sentences with downward, solid intonations. Overall, a good 1st section of speeches!
