The nature of the business

About nine years ago I was told I was done as the managing editor of OK! Magazine.

I always compared that job to that of a baseball manager — you need to expect that your time will eventually come to an end. It’s the nature of the business.

While I was at the helm of OK!, the writing was literally on the wall. Signs were plastered throughout the office screaming 500, which stood for 500,000 in weekly sales.

I knew the sad reality. We were barely selling 350,000 per week.

Print, especially in the celebrity category, was in trouble.

So when I got the call that my time at OK! was done, I did a quick inventory.

Before my time at OK!, I had promoted the launch of In Touch Weekly. I then helped launch Life & Style Weekly and eventually became its editor in chief.

After my inventory, I knew I it was time to say goodbye to the celeb weekly category and move on to a new adventure.

I decided to go the #entrepreneurial route and start my own PR firm Mark Allen & Co. Today, we work with world class clients offering the best in PR as well as an editorial services.

The bottom line? Those moments when it seems like I don’t have a choice, I do have one. For me, I combined my career experiences to start a new, much more fulfilling journey.
