Now that we’ve covered the different types of Amazon keyword themes and how you can best identify the right search terms for your unique product, it’s time to look at how best to leverage these search terms. Keywords are as good as useless if you’re not properly implementing them into your copy and product configuration, which is why we’re going to look at best practices for Amazon keyword implementation.

Optimizing Your Backend Search Terms

To add search terms:

  • On the Inventory tab, click Manage Inventory.
  • Click Edit, which is to the right of each product listed.
  • On the page that opens, click the Keywords tab and enter your keywords in the Search Terms box.

While setting up your Backend Search Terms in your listing, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Stay under the 250-character length limit
  • Include synonyms
  • Include spelling variations
  • Include abbreviations and alternate names
  • All lower case is ok
  • You don’t need punctuation
  • Separate words with spaces
  • Don’t repeat words within the search terms field
  • Don’t include your brand or other brand names in search terms
  • No need for prepositions
  • No need for temporary terminology like “new” or “on sale now”
  • Don’t use subjective claims like “best” or “cheapest”

As with all things writing-related, be sure to either hire help from a professional copywriter, or send your work to at least two different people for proofreading. Nothing is more unattractive than a misspelled Amazon listing that communicates unprofessionalism and a lack of focus.

Now that you have your keywords identified and a plan for effective implementation, we’re going to look at optimizing the listings for the search engine in Part 3.
