Parents in the United Kingdom are still relied on heavily by their children to assist with household repairs and renovations well after the kids have flown the nest.
Despite an increasing trend for watching online tutorials, young homeowners in the UK are still likely to ask for parental help when it comes to home improvement, often counting on Mum and Dad to offer financial backing too.
Figures collected in a recent survey suggest that 34% of those questioned search online video channels such as YouTube and Vimeo when looking for guidance on completing domestic tasks as varied as hanging pictures, installing washing machines and fitting a shower.
However, a resounding 40% admitted they still ask for help from their parents with performing household repairs, either by seeking advice or persuading them to assist in undertaking DIY work. In terms of cost, 19% of those surveyed confessed that they would rely on financial support from their parents in order to buy the materials required for home maintenance tasks. However, in many cases, young homeowners could be spending more than they need to on materials, rather than bringing in the professionals to get the job done and source the best priced painting and decorating supplies.
Although help from online tutorials and willing parents is still very much an option, the survey found that professional contractors are a popular alternative for young householders, especially those based in and around the Capital.
56% of those surveyed said they would ask for professional assistance with home improvement, a figure that was significantly higher in London where 68% of those surveyed had, or would, turn to hired help. For people who are new to home decoration, it could be much more cost effective to call professional painters and decorators rather than risking making DIY mistakes.
Despite continued political uncertainty in the UK, house prices have risen 5% in recent months, explaining why hopeful young homebuyers are increasingly looking to save money by purchasing properties that require significant decoration and renovation.
