What Is a Martial Art Mind State?

Definition of state of mind: Webster’s Dictionary

“a person’s emotional state : mood”

To me a Martial Arts Mind State is the state of mind where the mind adapts to making its assessments of situations and scenarios at hand or in the future. It is where your mind factors in how you will take on the objective, lesson, adversity or opponent that stands before you. It determines your actions and reactions to everything being taken in by your senses of awareness. Your internal emotions and environmental stimuli can change your state of mind and ultimately the outcome of the end resolve. I’ve put together a list of sorts for what I believe are the core 4 martial arts mind states and my interpretative philosophy of them.

Flow State: Effortlessness.

The Best State Of Mind For Combat.

In this mind state you just simply flow, there’s a deep fluidity to this state of mind, as Bruce Lee said “Be formless, be shapeless, like water!” This is where your higher essence takes over and does the actions before you, effortlessly!
