I think it’s also important to consider the impact of otherwise healthy product competition.
If you think of the retro-classic “home of the future,” it doesn’t include a hodgepodge of products from different companies each employing unique protocols such that the devices can barely speak to one another. The urge to iterate means that major software updates cause rapid senescence, and before you know it your smart home gets out of date as fast as your phone.
Competition in this market is great and pushes each competitor to develop new and better solutions — but a more comprehensive integration of products and services is absolutely necessary to make the seamless smart home of the future into a reality.
