The so-called “echo chamber” effect, in which extreme views become even more extreme. The best way to diffuse extreme opinions is to dilute them, and that means giving them the opportunity to be heard.
As awful as that sounds, it will give the public the unique opportunity to consider, or soundly reject, the stated opinions. When you forbid speech, you only make people curious, at best.
